Nursing home resident, 87, is robbed of €80,000 life savings by care worker on Spain’s Costa Blanca

A TORREVIEJA nursing home worker has been arrested along with a man for clearing out over €80,000 from an 87-year-old female resident.

The woman was left with just 63 cents in her bank account in April when she told home managers about her plight.

The Guardia Civil opened an investigation and discovered unauthorised withdrawals had started being made in December 2022.

WORKER IN CUSTODY

Officers identified three possible offenders including a worker at the home who made payments and cash withdrawals from the victim’s account totalling €40,000 euros.

The other alleged perpetrators were a niece of the victim and her partner who grabbed €42,000 in withdrawals and transfers as well as using the money for gambling.

At one stage the Guardia Civil discovered that one of the suspects was about to leave Spain, and so they arrested the 42-year-old female worker and a 52-year-old man, who is the partner of the 78-year-old niece who is under investigation.

The probe uncovered that the victim’s niece and her partner even rented out her home without her consent.

Inquiries also revealed that the man had stolen €28,000 from his partner’s bank account.

All accounts and financial assets have been blocked until investigations are concluded.

It’s the latest case of a vulnerable elderly person on the Costa Blanca being robbed by a nursing home worker or a carer.

In July, a carer was accused of stealing over €50,000 from a bank account belonging to a 91-year-old British man in Rojales.

The Brit became suspicious when he got notifications for non-payments when thought he had plenty of money to cover his bills.

He had to resort to requesting money from his son to meet his daily expenses.
