TORREVIEJA City Council has started to demolish an illegal viewpoint built on the city’s Punta Margalla promenade seven years ago.
The Coastal Authority ordered its removal after it was constructed without permission on public maritime land.
The area covers around 160 m2 located on the waterfront, near to a fountain.

Council workers are having to remove the wood decking that had been laid down as well as demolishing concrete that supported the viewing platform.
The work will not entail lowering that parti of the promenade to the level of the rocky coastline below it.
The current terrain will be maintained and after the structure is removed, an earth surface finish will remain.
Two lampposts will also be removed and relocated. The regional Coastal Authority office demanded that Torrevieja remove the illegal viewpoint when the council asked for permission, which was granted, to redevelop the Los Locos beach promenade.
The authorisation procedures allowed the Coastal Authority an opportunity to reverse the work at Punta Margalla as a precondition of giving the go-ahead for the Los Locos project.
The changes to the Punta Margalla promenade were included in the Alicante Provincial Council’s 2014 Provincial Cooperation Plan.
That project covered the seafront area located between Punta Margalla and Avenida de las Habaneras.
A contract for over €826,000 was awarded and work started in February 2019, with the revamped promenade opening in July that area.
The bundling of the area did not include Coastal Authority permission for a viewpoint at Punta Margalla, hence its eventual removal.
In 2023, the Authority forced the demolition of an iconic restaurant that had been operating for 80 years on public land at Torrevieja’s Playa del Cura.
