ALICANTE province’s population has broken the two million mark according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics(INE) with foreign migrants fuelling the increase.
Based on municipal padron registrations, the population in July stood at 2,008,809.
A decade ago it was 1,845,264, meaning an increase of over 150,000 registered residents.
The figures also show a rise of 31,883 residents compared to a year ago.
Compared to the first quarter of 2024, 6,100 people were added to the INE total and nearly 5,000 are non- Spanish nationals.
In raw figures, Alicante province now has 472,701 residents of foreign nationality- 26% of the population.
According to INE forecasts for the next decade, the foreign population will account for a third for the province’s total.
Alicante is the fourth most populous province in Spain, behind Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia but ahead of Malaga and Sevilla.
As for age ranges, the most people in the area are aged between 45 and 49 years, totalling 166,00, followed by 50 to 54 years with around 158,000.
The population though is ageing, with people between 60 and 99 years and older accounting for 27.7% of the population, namely 557,127.
The INE says that percentage will increase in the coming years.
