Costa Blanca beach tragedy sees young couple drown

A UKRAINIAN couple- both aged 25- drowned at a Guardamar del Segura beach on Saturday.

The man and woman were Polish residents and were visiting friends in the Costa Blanca town.

Despite a red flag being raised at Els Vivers beach due to significant currents, two women went for a swim.

They got in difficulty trying to get out and their partners went into the water to get them out.

One of them succeeded but the other man got into trouble himself.

Several people managed to pull the couple out of the water shortly after 2pm and emergency services were contacted.

Ambulances were sent to the beach but the man and woman could not be revived by paramedics.

Guardamar’s mayor, Jose Luis Saez, said that lifeguard services are maintained on the Centro and Roqueta beaches until the end of the month, but not at Els Vivers, which is around two kilometres away from the centre.

He added that currents are an issue at all local beaches and it is easy for bathers to get exhausted and be dragged by them.
