Nine swimmers are rescued by lifeguards on Spain’s Costa Blanca after ‘ignoring yellow and red flags’

A SUNDAY of sheer recklessness saw nine people rescued from El Campello’s two main beaches on the Costa Blanca.

The bathers blatantly ignored yellow and red flags warnings over swimming restrictions.

The situation got so out of control that lifeguards called in the El Campello Policia Local to provide cover as they went into the water to rescue bathers.

Officers also prevented anybody else from going into the sea- in direct contravention of the flags.

Lifeguards said it was easily the busiest day of the year for them at Muchavista and Carrer la Mer beaches- the two biggest sandiest areas in the municipality.

In all nine cases, swimmers flouted warnings and even ignored the loud whistles urging them to get out of the water.

Six bathers at Muchavista and three are Carrer la Mar were rescued by a dozen lifeguards.

A 52-year-old tourist drowned at Muchavista beach in late July.
