MOTORISTS have been warned about a new ‘sophisticated’ speed trap that has appeared on a key Torrevieja entrance route.
The unit has been installed on the CV-905 between the San Luis and La Siesta roundabouts which is a dual-carriageway with a 50 km/s speed limit.
The new equipment, standing two-and-half metres high and powered by two solar panels, is still being ‘calibrated’ and will enter service towards the end of September.
UNIT NEXT TO LOS MONTESINOS-BOUND CARRIAGEWAY
It uses microwaves to detect vehicle speeds which are transmitted to photographic equipment to clock offenders.
It can also detect people travelling without speed belts and drivers holding mobile phones.
The gear cost around €60,000 to install with an annual maintenance fee of €6,500
It will monitor speeds on both carriageways where the 50 km/s limit was introduced in 2018 after it was reclassified as an urban route.
Prior to that, a speed limit of 70 km/s was in operation between Torrevieja and the San Luis roundabout, but regular CV-906 users can testify that many motorists drive as if it still exists.
A DGT study says that 47 accidents have been recorded on a two-kilometre stretch of the road since 2019, resulting in three serious injuries and 26 minor ones.
