Valencia region doctors start indefinite strike

A MEDICAL union has called for doctors to go on indefinite strike in Alicante province and across the Valencian Community from Wednesday(October 28).

That’s due to the ongoing dispute with the government over pay and conditions.

National strike action was due to start on Friday but was suspended due to the forthcoming general election on November 29.

Nevertheless unions in five regions have decided to press forward with a strike already in progress from October 16 in the Canary Islands.

Besides the Valencia region, strike calls starting on Wednesday have also come regional unions in Catalunya and Madrid.

Andalucia is scheduled to join on November 13, which means the industrial action will then hit 64% of Spain’s population.

The main demands are over reducing or scrapping mandatory on-call duty as well as boosting salaries.

Unions also want to reduce the overall workload of members to be cut as well as increased staff recruitment.

The AVANZA union in Valencia is specifically wanting the Health Ministry to limit mandatory on-call shifts to three per month and to increase pay for them by 50%,

They also want shifts limited to a maximum of 12 hours, as well as more doctors- especially in Primary Care.

The union said in a press release that ‘sufficient ground remains to continue with strike action in the Valencian Community’.

” We have suggested concrete measures to improve working conditions for doctors and resolving issues that directly affect the daily operation of our healthcare centres, but nothing has happened,” the AVANZA statement continued.
