VALENCIA will spend €3.5 million on Christmas, Three Kings, and Fallas festival lights over the next three years.

The City Council has awarded a new contract that starts in October and says the ornamental lights will cover more streets and be sustainable.

Municipal spokesperson, Juan Carlos Caballero, said: “It is about generating excitement and enthusiasm for residents and tourists as well as contributing to the revitalisation of the city and local business by creating a pleasant nightlife atmosphere.”

He defended the increase in the lights budget as a larger number of streets and districts will be served including main routes into Valencia.

Carlos Caballero promised that new technology will be embraced with high-efficiency lighting to keep energy consumption down to a minimum.

“In the year that we are the European Green Capital, we do not want more light, but better, more comfortable lighting, taking into account energy efficiency, light pollution and the possible non-visual effects of light on people,” he stated.

The council will set up a special design team to develop concepts with the contract holder for themes and projects for holiday and festival periods.

The contract also includes among other things putting up and taking down the displays, power supplies, and monitoring of the lights.
