FRESH police raids were executed in Benidorm’s ‘English Zone’ on Thursday with two premises visited in an ongoing push against drug trafficking and other infractions.
The Policia Nacional and Benidorm’s Policia Nacional visited two hospitality businesses on Calle Gerona.
The inspections resulted in reports concerning drugs, weapons and safety deficiencies, in addition to a ‘serious’ sanction to an establishment that did not have civil liability insurance.
THURSDAY RAID
The checks followed on from two days of raids on pubs and clubs owned by two brothers in late March which led to 80 arrests- mainly connected to drug sales.
The premises were not visited in March and are not owned by the two brothers who were arrested.
The police have made it clear that checks will continue throughout the peak holiday season throughout the area.
One of the businesses visited was the Morgan Tavern on Calle Gerona which issued an official statement about Thursday’s events.
POLICE INSPECTION
It claimed that just ‘one issue’ was detected which was the lack of a remote activator for a vaping machine, which was resolved that same evening.
The statement continued: “This is the first time that Morgan Tavern has undergone an operation of this kind.”
“Our venue and other establishments within the group have always worked to maintain a safe and responsible environment, actively cooperating to prevent the presence of drugs, illegal street vendors, pickpockets, and any situation that could negatively affect the safety or image of the area.”
It also stated that they have long demanded a greater police presence via foot patrols to counter drug trafficking and pickpocketing.
The Policia Nacional said the latest inspections complement the investigative work carried out in recent months against criminal groups based in the area.
It added that its operations are well received by numerous customers and residents.
