THE warm air mass that brought record-breaking high temperatures to Northern Europe including the UK is arriving in Spain with predictions of 37C values in Alicante province.
State weather forecaster Aemet says the phenomenon will bring ‘extraordinarily high temperatures’ for late May and early June that are more typical of a July heatwave.
Last year brought record highs for June in the region as the summer heatwave arrived a month early.
Predicción para el resto de la semana:??Continúa el episodio de temperaturas extraordinariamente altas para esta época, más propia de pleno verano. Aemet stated that there is no return in sight to seasonal averages in the next few days.
They predict values of up to 36C inland over the weekend, going up a further degree on Monday.
The Vega Baja area is likely to be most affected along with other inland parts of Alicante province.
On the coast, the maximums are expected to be lower reaching a high of 30C over the next few days.
Another issue is the early arrival of tropical nights with temperatures not falling below 20C- meaning the first such phenomenon of the year.
Alicante University’s Climatology department says that cooling breezes are taking the edge off the unseasonally high temperatures, which countries like the UK and France had to endure.
The Mediterranean ‘is rapidly warming up and will probably be in the news very soon’, it stated with sea temperatures up to 5C above normal for late May.
“For all intents and purposes it is a heatwave taking into account the normal values and the time of year,” the department commented.
