SANTA Pola council banned swimming at one of the municipality’s main beaches on Thursday over concerns about water quality.
Tests by the General Directorate of Water at the Gran Playa led to the bathing ban being introduced as a precaution.
New tests will be carried on Thursday to see if health parameters are met.

The temporary restriction does not affect access to the Gran Playa sands.
Santa Pola City Council said that the objective is to reopen the beach for bathing ‘as soon as favourable results are obtained’.

In a social media posting, the authority thanked the understanding of residents and tourists- insisting that the ban is a response to the protection of public health.
Microbiological tests are carried out periodically to detect possible changes that could pose a risk to swimmers.
They include an increase in certain bacteria or specific episodes of pollution caused by rain, spills or sea currents.
When a water sample presents figures outside the established limits, the procedure is to closure a bathing area until new tests are carried out to guarantee that water standards are met.
